Why Ayurveda is my Dharma and One-to-One Sessions
If you have been around for any amount of time you have probably figured out that I am super passionate about Ayurveda. But you may not know why …
In 2013, I was 27 years old and at my ropes end when it came to my health. From around 2009 and until the autumn of 2013 I struggled with what my doctor described as chronic illness but I was un-diagnosed comprehensively. What my western doctors knew was that I had Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome, IBS, Adrenal burn out, and on top of that a slew of symptoms such as not being able to eat without terrible pain and discomfort, weight gain, acne, and depression. They left me un-diagnosed because they couldn’t seem to come to a conclusion on what my root issue was. I was on multiple medications and feeling rather defeated.
But then one day my Mother-in-Law let me borrow an audio copy of Deepak Chopras Ageless Body, Timeless Mind and this was the first I heard of Ayurveda. I was intrigued. And I couldn’t stop thinking about it. One day I googled Ayurveda in my hometown- thinking there was no way that someone would be practicing such an exotic sounding medicine in my midwestern town- but lo and behold, there was one clinic and I immediately scheduled an appointment.
I committed myself 100% to the protocol that my practitioner gave me. I showed up every month for my appointment with a full report on the last months experiences. I changed my diet, I took my herbs, I began practicing yoga and meditating. And in 6 months time I stood in the middle of our tiny apartment kitchen with my husband beside me and threw away all of my medications away. After 4 years of suffering, countless doctors appointments and tests, my weary bones were being revived.
It has now been 6 years of living medication free, being cyst free, and having regular daily poos (hey, that is very important!). My journey with my Ayurvedic practitioner is what inspired me to pursue formerly learning Ayurveda and I got my Yoga teachers certification just to qualify me for the Ayurveda Yoga Specialist training that was happening at my local studio. I have been a forever student ever since. Living Ayurveda for 6 years, formerly trained for 3, and still learning each and every day. I also hope to continue layering to that education here in the near future!
If I hadn’t hit my rock bottom, felt so foreign in my own body, and found my way back through this wisdom I don’t know where I would be today. But I can’t even think about that. Because it did happen. And along the way I found my life dharma- or purpose.
My purpose specifically is to teach others and empower them to reclaim their place as healer in their own lives. Ayurveda just happened to choose me to channel its wisdom into the world and help me fulfill this soul plan. I was born a Pitta-Kapha which makes me passionate and nurturing which I have found incredibly helpful in this line of work!
Why This is Good News for You …
At the end of 2018 I took a beat from my teaching and workshop hosting schedule to refocus myself and do some deep inner healing. My growth and experiences with living Ayurvedically had begun to radically change the way I looked at my life and I began working towards the now popular concept of slow living. I really had to dig into this idea and get honest on the alignment of my life. As I was working through this inner process I was blessed with the opportunity to actually work at the Ayurveda Center that started it all for me- it was a definite ‘pinch me’ moment! This has given me the space to reconnect with a strong Ayurvedic community and explore the way in which I can be of service to you in workshops, classes and 1:1 sessions.
What are 1:1 Sessions like?
I only open my calendar once a season for 1:1 sessions (they are actually open now for Autumn!) and the number one question I get is- what happens in a session?
First • Before we even get started I send you an intake form that prompts you to select and fill out details about yourself. This covers health goals, health concerns, discomforts you may be dealing with, and what challenges you have had on your journey to wellness (if any!).
Second • In your session we review that intake form. Your answers help me to determine your unique constitution, or make-up of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It also helps me determine what dosha(s) may be out of balance, if you have the presence of toxins in your body and your vital essence levels (prana, tejas, & ojas). By learning your mind/body type, imbalance, and levels of toxins and vital essences you can know yourself a bit more intimately through the elements and we can develop a plan to support your goals.
Third • We create a plan! I will offer recommendations but it is always a collaboration between us- there is no point in creating a protocol that doesn’t feel good to you. You will learn Ayurvedic tools and philosophy to support you where you are and help move you toward more vitality. My goal is always simple, achievable and layerable steps that flow into your life ease-fully and support you as an individual. We will talk morning and bedtime routines, mealtimes & food, along with daily ritual- practices that allow you to get more out of life with very little effort. Pretty cool, right?
Fourth • You go forward from your session with a plan ready to put into action. You will receive a file with all the details of what we discovered about your doshas and vital essences along with your plan within 24 hrs to help guide you and keep for your records. For up to one month after your session you have email access for any questions that might pop up- sometimes it happens as you begin living your plan in your daily life!
If Ayurveda calls to your heart, I hope you answer. It is the worlds oldest wellness system, time tested, and yet completely accessible and relevant to today. If you have specific health concerns I invite you to explore what Ayurveda can help course correct. Once you are back in balance, that is when the daily dosha balancing practices come into play to keep you healthy over time.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and be a part of my dharma. Even by reading this Journal you are part of this journey. If you want more, then I do invite you to explore a session or if a class is more your style there are some of those too!
